1973 Tiger Football Vs. Wake Forest

(Photos Uploaded By Alan Cutts)
Today’s photo is from the 1973 season and shows the Tigers in action against Wake Forest on a perfect weather day for football.

The 1973 season was Red Parker's first season and the Tigers won the game 35-8.I like this picture for a variety of reasons.

First, it is a great action photo of the game. I also like the fact that the kicker is a “straight on” kicker, like most were in that day and age. I remember the first “soccer style” kicker at Clemson was Obed Ariri in the late 70’s and early 80’s. (Note:  Thanks to Al Koon for correcting me.  Eddie Seigler was a "soccer style" kicker in the early 1970's.)

I also like this picture because you can see the “U” on top of the hill. Clemson was promoting the newly minted University stature and you would see “CU” promoted everywhere, even on the hill at football games!

The final thing I like about this picture is the orange tarp that was the “fence” at the bottom of the hill. It does look cheap compared to the nice fence we have down there now, but I have fond memories as a kid hanging out at the bottom of the hill on that tarp for many a game.

(Note: If you have old pictures dating before 1990 that are Clemson related and you would like to share them, send them to me in an email with as much information about the picture as you can give and I will use it for a future “Clemson Historic Picture Of The Day”).
