Frank Howard’s Last Home Game Aided By Charlie Waters

Today’s photo is from November 1st, 1969 and a miserable day in Clemson with rain and cold permeating.Clemson was hosting Maryland and Clemson was taking it to the Terps on this rainy day.

When the game was over, Clemson won 40-0 having scored in every possible way including a safety. Only 22,802 fans were in attendance, much of that due to the weather. The win was Clemson’s 350th win in the history of the program.

But what most of the 22,802 Clemson fans in the stadium did not know, yet, was that they were a witness to the last game Frank Howard would coach at Clemson. Howard would retire at the end of the season, having won 165 games with 118 losses and 2 ties.

The picture below is from that same game in 1969 and shows Charlie Waters in the hood. Waters came to Clemson as a QB, but was converted to a wide receiver. Waters had a great game on this day and would soon be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.


Waters came out of North Augusta High School and he was a Shrine Bowl participant in 1965. Waters earned All-ACC in 1969 before finishing his career at Clemson.

Waters was selected to the All-Rookie team in Dallas his first year, when he also won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. was All-Pro several seasons in Dallas as a defensive back for the Cowboys. Waters played 12 seasons in the NFL, never experienced a losing season and only missed the playoffs one time during that span.

He played in five Super Bowls: V, VI, X, XII, and XIII, with victories in VI and XII. He holds the NFL record for most playoff interceptions with 9 and has the unique achievement of blocking 4 punts in 2 consecutive games.

To this day, he is one of the most revered and respected players in franchise history. He was selected to the Dallas Cowboys Silver Anniversary Team.
