Today’s photo is from the 1983 season and we see quarterback Mike Eppley handing off to fullback Kevin Mack against 4th ranked UGA.
The game ended in a 16-16 tie with both teams kicking back to back field goals in the last 6 seconds of the game. Donald Igwebuike kicked a 55 yard field goal that had the distance but was missed wide left. With 1 second left on the clock, Georgia’s Kevin Butler trotted out and attempted a 49 yard field goal that missed short as time expired.
Butler would get his revenge a year later, kicking a 60 yard field goal as time expired to defeat Clemson in Sanford Stadium.
Because of the newly opened North Upper Deck, this was the first time the attendancein Death Valley reached 81,000.
You can also notice the Pony shoes the Tigers had on in this picture. These shoes were very popular in college athletics in the early 1980’s. The patch on the Tiger’s pants is in recognition of IPTAY's 50th Anniversary.
